Things I’m afraid of thanks to Doctor Who

1. Statues; especially angelic and cherubic statues.
2. Books; they may be infected with Vashta Nerada.
3. Hallways; bad shit always happens running up and down hallways.
4. People knocking 4 times; knock 3 times or 5 times. If you knock only 4 times I won’t speak to you unless you knock once more.
5. Rapid weight loss; I wouldn’t mind using my fat to create cute alien beings but I don’t want the planet destroyed.
6. Televisions; I happen to like my face.
7. Seemingly innocuous cubes; because random cubes showing up on Earth is not only stupid but potentially dangerous.
8. British children in gas masks asking for their mommy; ’cause that’s TOTALLY not creepy…
9. Discovering water on Mars; I like what Curiosity is doing but it is also freaking me out.
10. Astronaut suits; Damn you River Song!
11. Christmas trees; they are vicious!
12. Snowmen; as I’m surrounded by tons of snow!
13. Mannequins; which is tragic because I work in the apparel industry.

Things I’m NOT afraid of thanks to Doctor Who

1. Hitler; asshole.

Game of Thrones is such a treat! Each episode was as engaging as the next. So many characters rose and fell. No one is safe; a painful lesson learned from the first season that continued to be reinforced throughout the second season.

So much has happened in season that I feel compelled to address events via each major character. If you need a refresher on season 2, continue reading.

Tyrion Lannister:

Tyrion is the stand-out character of the season for me. I feel comfortable calling him a hero even though he ended up in a sewing hutch at the end of the season. Tyrion is my favorite character because he can talk his way out of almost anything. At the beginning of the season, he talked his way out of a prison cell and into becoming Hand of King Joffrey. Cersei hates the idea but accepts it begrudgingly. Any chance she gets, she berates Tyrion and even blames him for the death of their mother. Cersei becomes so hostile that Tyrion uses her secret boy-lover as a spy. Tyrion has made several backhanded and invisible, strategic moves but there had to be overwhelming audience support of him smacking the hell out of King Joffrey. As King Joffrey’s rule becomes more unstable, Tyrion has to make moves to stymie citizen dissent. In addition to potential revolt, King’s Landing is under pending attack of Lord Stannis Baratheon. Even though King’s Landing is outmanned and outgunned by Baratheon, Tyrion prepares the city for battle. He uses his secret chemical wildfire that gives his forces a fighting chance. While the wildfire was effective, events became so dire that Tyrion joins his forces on the battlefield and is badly wounded. At the eleventh hour, Lord Tywin swoops in, saves the day, takes the title as Hand of the King, and takes the credit for all of Tyrion’s hard work.

Tyrion also manages to nurture a budding romance with Shae who is a prostitute but seems to be hiding a secret; perhaps privileged life? Tyrion keeps the relationship secret and manages to get Shae assigned as Sansa’s hand-maiden. Cersei finds out about the secret love but unknowingly captures the wrong woman leaving Shae still Tyrion’s secret.

Cersei Lannister:

Talk about mean girl and crazy pre-mother-in-law!  Cersei bared her claws in full view this season and still managed to get my sympathy on TWO and a half separate occasions! This woman supported the beheading of Eddard Stark. She had sex with and was impregnated by her brother Jamie THREE TIMES while married to King Robert Baratheon. This season she vies for power and is manages to do a lot of damage. She is in constant battle with Tyrion because her father favors him over her and because Tyrion has her eldest daughter Myrcella sent away. Cersei plays the game as best she can before before ending up in a dungeon with other whimpering women drinking wine and waiting to be raped or committing suicide before it can happen. Even though she wishes to slip into a pair of pants and wield a sword herself, she is still relieved to be rescued by Lord Tywin.

Cersei was extremely harsh and dismissive to Sansa Stark. At times it seemed like she was trying to take Sansa under her wing to toughen the girl up. It also seems as if she set Sansa free by supporting Joffrey’s marriage to Margaery Tyrell. Everyone felt her anguish at having to let go of her daughter and not being with the man she really loves… even if that man is her brother. Her wallowing in self-pity is the closest thing to regret we will probably see from her. It almost felt like she admitted her guilt at sleeping with her brother and producing the demon spawn Joffrey. Cersei garnered the most sympathy in while she awaited the outcome of the Battle at Blackwater. Any woman, whether you like Cersei or not, could related to and be horrified at her situation.

Sansa Stark:

Sansa had to be the saddest case of an abused woman to ever grace our TV screens. She had to watch her father be beheaded, see his head on a spike, AND marry the man who ordered it. She had been slapped around, belittled, held against her will, and kept from her family all under the threat of death and the stigma of having a reputation as the daughter of a traitor. She cried and whimpered the whole season. The only solace for her is that Joffrey didn’t want to touch her until she got her period. When “Aunt Flo” finally made her appearance  Sansa hid the information from Joffrey until she was found out by a servant. Luckily for Sansa, King’s Landing was under threat of dissent and attack so Joffrey didn’t have a chance to make good on his disgusting threat to “put a son in her”.

Sansa wasn’t without a guardian angel this season. Clegane, “The Hound”, became protective of her even saved her from being raped by unruly citizens and graciously offered to take her with him before he cowardly fled King’s Landing during the battle. She refused to go with him and remained a hostage of King’s Landing. After being summarily dismissed as a wife candidate for Joffrey, Petyr Baelish offers to get her back to Winterfell but only if she agreed to be his wife.

I continually felt sorry for Sansa. Sure, she chose to marry Joffrey but she found out that he was a cowardly snot way too late to back out. She’s a smart girl. She managed to survive a severely hostile environment and could quite possibly see freedom at a price. If I were her, I’d agree to marry Baelish only if she makes it to Winterfell then have one of the maids shank him in his sleep. Should she get caught, her mom would probably make her queen.

Joffrey Baratheon:

What a prick.

Joffrey is fine lesson on why incest is taboo and an excellent endorsement for the invention of condoms. He had a man beheaded, he had his help slap his fiancee in public, he’s had men executed, and carelessly killed, brutally beaten prostitutes only to cower when slapped by his uncle and hide when his city was attacked by outsiders. This guy is a piece of work. I can’t wait to see him beheaded.

Lord Tywin Lannister:

Father of Cersei, Jaime, and Tyrion, Lord of Casterly Rock, and Warden of the West, Lord Tywin sat in a chair at a table, eating food and talking with people for most of the season. However, nothing says winning like entering a throne room on a horse that poops on the floor indoors.

Arya Stark:

The Stark sisters are having a rough time. Arya escaped King’s Landing and has been roaming the countryside disguised as a boy. She is captured by a roving bounty hunter and taken to Harrenhal. She makes an alliance with a mysterious prisoner who speaks in rhyme named Jaqen H’ghar who refers to himself as The Man. He is grateful to her for releasing him from capture and offers to kill three people of her choice. She chooses a Harrenhal torturer, a knight and bannerman for Lannister who caught Arya reading battle plans. The third person Arya wants killed is Tywin. When Jaqen refused, Arya ordered Jaqen to kill himself. In exchange for getting Arya to change her mind about having Jaqen commit suicide he agreed to help her escape Harrenhal. After he helps Arya escape, Jaquen hands her a coin telling her to say “valar morghulis” to any Braavosi and he will show up. Then he changed his face to an unattractive stranger then walked off into the sunset.

When she isn’t having people killed, Arya finds herself working for Lord Tywin after he figures out she is a girl. He keeps her secret but has her serve him food. She listens in as Tywin makes battle plans. She hears valuable information and decides to escape to get back to her brother or Winterfell.

Arya is a resilient chameleon/mynx hybrid this season! Her instinct for needing to toughen up proved to be useful to her. Sansa would not have been able to survive such harsh living conditions. I hope she makes it home.

Robb Stark:

Robb became a roving ass-kicker who put King’s Landing and Lord Tywin on notice. After his father is killed Robb gathered his bannerman and marches on towards King’s Landing. In order to transverse a key territory, Robb has to agree to marry the daughter of the Lord of the Twins. This wasn’t a problem until he met Nurse Skankisa… pardon my possessed keyboard I mean Talisa Maegyr. Not only did he have a steamy romp session on the floor of his pimp tent, he runs off and marries the chick. Despite this misstep, Robb has a lot of men running for cover. He has even captured Jamie Lannister and is using him as a handsome hostage. Robb is at odds with his mother because she went behind his back and released Jamie thus losing his advantage. He shut her out of war negotiations and married Talisa against her advice.

I have a feeling that marriage to Nurse Skankisa will bite Robb massively square in the arse. It could be the thing that costs him the war; that or his mom making ridiculous decisions like releasing Jamie.

Catelyn Stark:

Catelyn ran around roaring on behalf of her son and trying to get back her girls at the beginning of the season.  She visited Renly Baratheon to negotiate an alliance on behalf of Robb. Renly is full of his 100 thousand soldiers and doesn’t think such an alliance is necessary. Baelish travels to the Stormlands to let Catelyn know that Tyrion will release her children if she releases Jamie. Catelyn is eventually successful and convinces Renly to join her alliance. Shortly thereafter, Renly is assassinated by a shadowy man made of smoke and evil. This is witness by Catelyn and Brienne, Renly’s female Kingsguard, witness the act. Before the two women could react, two other Kingsguards enter the tent and accuse Brienne of murdering Renly. Brienne kills the guards, escapes with Catelyn and continues to serve as a Catelynsguard. Catelyn frees Jamie behind Robb’s back and sends him to King’s Landing under the protection of Brianne.

If she were any other woman, instead of guarded arrest, Robb would have beheaded her. Other than her decision to release Jamie, Lady Stark had a level head on her shoulders for the whole season. I applaud her decision to employ Brienne.

Lord Stannis Baratheon:

Lord Stannis brought the crazy this season. After finding out Cersei’s children were fathered by her brother, he declares King Joffrey’s rule illegitimate and marches to King’s Landing to claim his rightful place as King.  He is having “relations” with the mystic and prophetic sorceress, Melisandre. Her motive is to convert the whole of Westeros into worshipers of some god named R’hllor. She converted Stannis by “predicting” he would be the next ruler of the Seven Kingdoms. On his way to King’s Landing, Stannis encounters Renly and offers him the position of heir to the Seven Kingdoms. Renly declines Stannis’s offer and allied with the Starks. Melisandre went to a cave, spread her legs and gave birth to a chimney smoke of a person whose first act as a newborn cloud puff is to murder Renly. I wonder how breast-feeding works? After Renly’s untimely and super convenient death, Renly’s men pledge allegiance to Stannis. Stannis makes his way to King’s Landing only to get his ass set aflame by Tyrion’s brilliant blue wildfire. Because he’s so whipped by the wicked witch of Westeros, Stannis wants to continue his assault on King’s Landing.

I’m not even sure what’s going on here. I kept forgetting who Stannis was the entire season. I understand that Melisandre is devoted to her god but I want to know her endgame. Is she trying to be Queen? Something more?

Theon Greyjoy:

Theon Greyjoy left Winterfell and went to crazy town. Robb sent Theon to the Iron Islands to form an alliance with his own father. After landing on the island Theon takes a horse ride to the Iron Castle with an unwashed, weathered woman. On the ride over he put his hands down the front of her pants and whispered sweet nothings until he literally arrived (not “arrived”) at the castle only to find out said woman was his sister Yara. GROSS! It wasn’t the warmest welcome either. Theon’s father, Balon, was not happy to see Theon and has disowned him. Balon refused to join the alliance because he thought of his son as weak. He told him his sister was a better man and leader than he was. It was proven when Yara garnered more respect from her men than Theon did. Theon decided to earn his father’s respect by storming and taking over Winterfell. He killed Ser Cassel and claimed to have killed Bran and Rickon. After practically burning Winterfell to the ground, Bolton returns to re-take it. Not having enough men, Theon gave convincing and inspirational battle speech only to be hit in the head by one of his men and carried off through the tunnels and out of Winterfell. What a joke! Not only does Theon not have a home now, he will most likely be executed by Rodd. If he is taken back to the Iron Islands, his father and sister will make him a laughing stock.

Theon will be beheaded. I’m ready for this to happen. Where ever he ends up, I hope no one takes pity on him.

Bran Stark:

This is a kid who is crippled for life because two twisted siblings wanted to keep their incestuous secret. After Robb went to war, Bran was left as heir-apparent to Winterfell. Hurricane Theon blew through and had to hide in his own castle. He had help from Hodor and the tempestuous, slippery Osha. Now Bran and his crew are on the run to the North to find Jon Snow.

I thought Bran would be unrealistically cured by magic by now.        …and seriously, I never wanted to see Natalia Tena naked. It totally warps my memory of Tonks.

Jon Snow:

Bastard. Literally.

I can’t blame Catelyn for being upset about raising the result of her husband’s affair but she could have not shown it so much. The kid couldn’t help it. If she was going to be so broken up about it she should have slipped the kid some poison and fed him to the direwolves. If not, shut up, grow up, and be decent to the kid. Jon, fed up with this treatment romanticizes about joining the Night’s Watch. Upon joining the Watch, Jon realizes that the recruits were nothing more than a wretched hive of scum and villainy. Some vows were recited, Jon didn’t make ranger but is being groomed to be Commander under the tutelage of Lord Mormont. For whatever reason, (I’m sure you fine folks will remind me of) a few of the rangers take off from Castle Black to look for Wildlings or the White Walkers or something… In the search for Spock, or whatever, they come across Craster’s Keep. Craster was a piece of work who married his daughters, made them work the land and “disappeared” any sons that were born. Samwell Tarley, a pudgy ranger who attached himself to Jon, fell in love with one of Craster’s daughter-wives and begged Jon to help him free the girl. Jon was about to help by saving the girl’s son and followed a man with one of Craster’s newborn sons when a White Walker FINALLY* decides to show up. Jon’s subterfuge was discovered. Craster got pissed and kicked the rangers off his property. Mormont confessed that he knew about the sacrificial baby boys and that they were an important part of keeping the White Walkers at bay. WHAT?!? How’s that? Do they eat the babies? Do they convert them? I need a little CSI: Westeros to understand what they hay is going on! The rangers continued North and captured some wildlings. Most of the group was killed but Jon spared a wildling woman, Ygritte. They end up having some sexual tension, Jon is distracted by her antics, and they are both separated from the rangers. Jon and Ygritte continue on a path that leads to Jon being captured by wildlings. Qhorin, another ranger, was also captured. For whatever reason, Qhorin wants Jon to appear to defect to the wildling camp and has Jon kill him to prove his loyalty. The wildlings buy it and Jon is now practically one of the family. They walk over a snowy hill and see a massive wildling camp.

Wight Walkers and White Walkers:

Elsewhere, Samwise Gamgee… pardon me, Samwell Tarly and the other rangers are overtaken by a horde of wight walkers lead by a White Walker on a zombified horse. It would have been cool if we hadn’t just seen the same thing on the second season finale of The Walking Dead. I guess these walkers were technically different because they were shuffling through the snow?

Daenerys Targaryen:

Daenerys lost her husband but gained three baby dragons. She has set upon a journey across a desert called the Red Waste. It is taking an extreme toll and even killing the remainder of the people still loyal to her. Jorah also has remained loyal to Daenerys and tells her of the city of Qarth. There is a chance the crew could be turned away from the walled, heavily protected city but Daenerys is desperate and heads there anyway. Thirteen bureaucrats in robes greet Daenerys at the gates but won’t let her in until they see her “dragons” which I think here is a code for breasts. She said she just doesn’t show her “dragons” like a cheap desert whore. She requires food, clothing, and shelter for her, her horde, and her dragons. Those cold-hearted, lily-livered men were happy to let her rot in The Garden of Bones until one of them slithered from the pack to vouch for Daenerys. Daenerys is given fancy clothes and meets with her rich benefactor Xaro Xhoan Daxos. The party is filled with the likes of politicians and magicians. Jorah is warned by a veiled woman about the motives of Xaro or the magicians or something. When Jorah warns Daenerys to stay on the path to the Iron Throne and not fall prey to the smooth talk of Xaro, she questions his motives. He makes matters worse by awkward revealing his love for her. Xaro proposes to Daenerys but she turns him down in order to procure ships for her voyage to King’s Landing. After campaigning for a ship, Daenerys goes back to her room to find many of her people brutally murdered and her dragons stolen. The creepy magician guy and Xaro conspired to steal her dragons. She stormed the ridiculous magic tower, went through secret doors, saw the ghost Drogo future and her phantom baby, then eventually found her dragons and encouraged them to fire-breathe the stupid magician to death. Daenerys tracks down Xaro only to find him in bed with slave slut Doreah. She marched Xaro and Doreah to the vault that he made such a big deal about no one being able to open, she opened it, told Xaro and Doreah to get in the vault, and locked them inside… ALIVE! Hell hath no fury like a dragon-wielding, Targaryen princess Khaleesi scorned!

Daenerys has grown the most as a character. She has come from being a meek little princess of an extinct race, being abused and pimped by her brother, raped by her husband, a widow, a mother who lost her child, born again from ashes with dragons, walked across a desert, survived a magic house of mirrors, destroyed a con man and a slut, and is now setting sail to sit on a throne made of iron swords. Heroine? I think so!

When I sat out to write this review-cap, I didn’t think I’d go well over 3000 words. I didn’t even think I enjoyed the second season of Game of Thrones as much as I did until I started writing. There were so many things going on that I often felt myself leaning into my screen with every episode. The only things that pulled me out of the story was all the exposition at Tywin’s dinner table. I’d rather see the battles than hear them explained to me while people are eating turkey legs and guzzling mead. Because that is my only nitpick, the show is doing a damned good job. I can’t wait for season 3!

*The White Walkers were the only reason I decided to watch Game of Thrones and thus far their involvement in the show has been lacking. I’m not happy with it but not so unhappy that I’d stop watching the show.

The final season of Fringe…

Hmmm…

Well…

This isn’t my favorite season of Fringe. I’m confident that I mostly know what’s going on but I can’t seem to care.  The arrival of The Observers was highly anticipated but they turned out NOT to be mysterious and awe-inspiring but a stock collective big-bad who are marginally smarter than Storm Troopers (No offense to Storm Troopers).

Why was Ella introduced only to have her killed only to have Peter install Observer tech in his neck only to take it out? Don’t answer that because I don’t care.

Why are on this ridiculous Beta tape hunt? Oooo! Wait… I don’t care.

The Observer kid was actually December! Yayyy! But zzzzz, I figured it out already.

Nina is dead… I got misty-eyed but ok now what?

I gotta tell ya, I see a lot of story-layering and mythology-building leading up to something major but I can’t see how it all will end in a satisfying way. It’s a good thing if the end of Fringe is epic. It’s a bad thing if the key to defeating The Observers is something lame like love, or prayer, or pixie dust. If either of those scenarios happen in any form, I’m gonna take to the streets and cause MAJOR damage.

…and by take to the streets and cause MAJOR damage I mean I’ll either complain on my blog or send out a tweet saying “Sigh #fringe“.

In its eighth season, Supernatural is starting to show its age. I knew when Dean came back from purgatory that we were going to be in for a season of cranky, self-righteous Dean. Sam is as weak as ever but this time, after knowing what he has gone through, I understand where he is coming from. In Sam eyes, Dean was dead so there was nothing left for him to do so he found a girl, a dog and a normal life. He’d lost everyone. Of course he didn’t want to hunt anymore. It was irresponsible of him to leave Kevin hanging. It was terrible of him to bury his head in the sand and pretend like demons weren’t running amok. The worst part of this scenario is that we’ve been here before. Dean has already come back from a supernatural plane with PTSD. Sam is always trying to have a normal life. They are always saving the world. At season 8, they need to switch it up. I’m not saying to go Stargate: SG1 and go Merlin/King Arthur/Lucian Alliance/Ori on us but let’s get something different; something more epic.

Kevin’s mom is funny. Kevin is mildly amusing but I’m ready for him to be free. Garth is always endearing. It was heartbreaking and amazing that he began filling the role of Bobby. Crowley is good but he needs to end the world or go away. His threats are tiresome… and that’s coming from a loyal Mark Sheppard fan! All of the characters we love are gone. The established dynamic with those characters are gone. We loved Bobby, Ellen Harvelle, Jo Harvelle, Ash, Rufus, hell Jefferey Dean Morgan a’int doing much BRING BACK DADDY WINCHESTER!

“Bitten” had to be the worst episode of Supernatural that I’ve seen in awhile. If not the worst, it was the least enjoyable for me. I can see how some people would like it but I just kept waiting for it to be over. Supernatural has done a found footage episode before, “Ghostfacers”, but it was funny and well paced. This episode was different and artistic but dull. “Blood Brother” was excellent. I love digging into Benny’s back story. It was sad how he had to “dispatch” his own girlfriend. Castiel… I want him to get it together because the despondent angel bit is old. I do enjoy that Amanda Tapping has joined the cast this season. I can’t wait to find out what she is up to. Is she good or bad? Only time will tell. We are nine episodes into the season and I’m concerned because the writer’s boredom is showing. I hope I am wrong and they are saving the good stuff for the remainder of the season. Oddly enough I can’t wait for more. Somehow, I know the writers are teasing me and the remainder of the season will be amazing.

In its second season Grimm found its footing, built its mythology, and fleshed out its characters.

At the beginning of the season, Nick’s girlfriend gets scratched by a witch cat and goes into a coma. She came out the coma via a kiss by the ever so sexy Captain Renard but the only catch is that she amnesia of Nick. That’s right; she remembers everything else in her life except Nick. This has to be the weakest part of the season because the memory loss story line is laborious and the Juliette/Nick relationship needs to end or stop being a distraction. Juliette is quickly becoming the Lana Lang of Portland. Nick’s partner Hank was on the verge of being the new Lana Lang but he finally learned of Nick’s secret and is now perhaps the Chloe Sullivan of Portland. I think I may miss Smallville…

Hank’s discovery and acceptance of Nick’s Grimm status almost took too long. In the end he sucked it up and started to play ball right before I started to wish for his death. I’d hoped Hank was some sort of underground wesen but alas he is only human. Sgt. Wu needs more to do. That guy is funny and is my favorite supporting character. Adalind and her vendetta bores me but I am curious at what she might uncover. After Sasha Roiz’s fine, FINE performance in his #shirtlessrage scene, we are left wondering what exactly Renard is. Juliette is also curious about Captain Renard and she is trying to uncover the mystery of her attraction to him by sticking her tongue down his throat. Hussy.

My biggest disappointment this season is the lack of Rosalee. There was a lot of fanfare in her being officially being added to the cast. I thought that meant we’d she more of her. Not only was she mostly absent, the scenes she appeared in she was on the phone talking to Monroe from out of town.

The overall theme of this season is unclear. The monster-of-the-week is a solid approach for each episode but how the overall arc is strung together it is borderline flimsy. Believe it or not, I’m ok with it. Grimm has enough of everything else and it does not have to be the perfect show for me to like it. I *will* say that I’d be even more forgiving if we could get more episodes with Sasha Roiz’s shirt off.

There have been better seasons of Vampire Diaries. The season three was rock solid; non-stop amazing. I was super pumped up when Elena became a vampire but post-death Elena became whiny and obnoxious. It was the total opposite of Caroline’s vampire transformation which turned her from whiny to bad-ass. I thought the introduction the Hunter Connor would spice things up and it did for about 3 episodes then they killed him off. What a terrible waste of man candy! As much as I like Klaus, I can’t understand why he remains in Mystic Falls. All of his excuses, doppelgänger, werevamps, etc. blah, seem flimsy at best and the reasons the writers present in the plot seem strained. I am however excited to see the return of his sister, Rebekah. I can’t wait for that smackdown to happen.

The love triangle between Elena, Stephan, and Damon is getting old. It seems as if the writers are 3 episodes away from going back to the Dear Diary days of the show. The brothers need to have some self-respect and move on. They are literally pining over a girl who looks like a girl that used them both and broke their hearts. Elena is no better than Catherine at this point. I used to side with Elena but she seems like a twat now. She needs to pick one or pull a Sookie Stackhouse and break up with them both. If it turns out that Elena is a vampire fairy, I’m gonna stab someone.

Tyler Lockwood. What, zzzz? Will the death of his mom make him more interesting? Jeremy. Now he’s the hunter. Bleh. Caroline is still on top of everything and has taken on the task of pushing this godforsaken story along. Who knows what Bonnie is doing? She is the pawn of a creepy, pedophilic teacher who is teaching her to do dark magic unbeknownst to her. I smell a Willow from Buffy plot line coming and if Bonnie has to go into magic rehab, I’m gonna stab someone… and by stabbing someone I mean write mean things on my blog while I sit in my pajamas at home with my 50 imaginary cats. (The pajamas are real.)

I’d like the show to return to pace of the of season two and three because as it stands now one of my favorite show is becoming a chore to watch. I’m not happy about this at all.

There is every reason for the show Once Upon a Time to have failed. On paper, it seems like everyone should hate a show about fairy tale characters who have forgotten who they really are and is stuck in a real-life town going on with a mundane life. It is a mystery why this show is as popular as it is but here we are. It is doubly mysterious that I really love this show. It is no secret that I love dramatic costumes so when you have television show with an evil queen waltzing around in larger than life gowns and outrageous head gear, I pay attention. I enjoy it even more that other people enjoy this show despite its wild wardrobe choices and fantastic story lines. I was 100% sure that people would dismiss this show as cheesy and it would be canceled in the first season like similar shows but Once Upon a Time has held strong.

Everything about Queen Regina is revolting yet compelling. During this season she has become less the black and white big bad and is a murky shade of grey who is now powerless and seeking redemption. I was certain a kid in the show would be obnoxious but Henry is an amazing character who is mostly responsible for moving the story along in interesting ways. Snow White and Prince Charming initially went through a heart-breaking reunion but are rightfully back together even after Regina tries her best to permanently separate them. Rumpelstiltskin is the most compelling character because you can never quite tell what his motive is. Like Regina, they both are a shade of grey but Rumpelstiltskin’s grey is a little darker. The story of Once Upon a Time is expertly designed and the has story staying power. I hope to see it last for many more seasons to come.

I was highly skeptical of the quality of Being Human when it premiered. Syfy had (yet again) canceled some of my favorite shows and I didn’t want to fall in love with another show only to have it ripped away. My friend Hanako insisted this was a great show and I trusted her but it was her video with Sam Huntington that changed my mind enough to watch the show. I started from the pilot and was surprised that I actually liked it. I didn’t have to try to like the show or give it a 5-episode chance because it sucked me in immediately. I love well-crafted pilots. Yes, the show is Angel meets Dead Like Me meets Teen Wolf but it also has its own personality and is good enough to be called a great programming moment on Syfy. Of course because I have gone on record as liking the show, as I write this someone is plotting to cancel it.

Josh is the character that I like the most. He has a very natural and self-deprecating humor that I find endearing. His awkwardness is done with so much ease that it’s like watching a graceful but nerdy man swan. I love that he’s from Ithaca (as in Ithaca is Gorges). I also love that he’s not perfect. His imperfections has tragic consequences resulting in turning one of his girlfriends a werewolf and the other is now dead. Aiden’s character taxes me the most because he is too similar to brooding vampire Angel, almost as broody as Lestat, not as broody as Edward; I guess you can call Aiden the baby bear of broody vampires. I enjoyed his involvement with Bishop and Mother. His relationship with Suren may have made me a tiny bit misty-eyed. The most tragic character is Sally. It is extremely unfortunate that she died in a drabby, grey jersey shirt and a big grey “time-of-the-month” sweater. I yearn for the moments where we can see a wardrobe change via flashback or hallucination. That being said, it is the permanent wardrobe that makes her character more real. It gives you that feeling that she’s stuck between worlds and adds to her tormented state. I’ve only seen season 1 and the 5 episodes that are currently on Hulu so I’ve missed a lot of her Dream Reaper story. I saw the tail end of it and it is well done. She makes you feel her pain and sorrow. This trio of supernatural beings work to help each other and they stumble through their monster lives as best they can together.

At last glance Being Human‘s ratings made it the most watch winter show on Syfy. Season three begins January 14, 2013 and runs through April 8, 2013.

For some, all you have to say is Terry O’Quinn to get them in the door. If you say Terry O’Quinn AND Vanessa Williams the most logical answer is “Why am I not watching this?!” 666 Park Avenue is a supernatural show about a seemingly haunted hotel that is run by perhaps the Devil. It’s 80% The Devil’s Advocate, 10% The Shining, and 10% random horror movie stock. The show works well enough with all of these elements and has creative twists paired with gruesome deaths which make it unique. Most of everyone at the hotel has made a deal with hotel owner/ mysterious Satan-like power mogul Gavin Doran. New couple Jane and Henry move in to The Drake which is on 999 Park Avenue but mysterious flips to 666 at convenient spooky moments. Jane has an interesting background with The Drake via her grandmother and is just starting to scratch at the surface of her past. Henry wants to become a powerful politician and keeps taking favors from Gavin. He is unwittingly digging a deeper hole for his soul.

My favorite story line has to do with a young reporter who makes a deal with Gavin to become a better and respected writer at her newspaper. She wrote a completely fabricated obituary about a regular man and created a dangerous Russian spy alter ego for him. To her horror, the Russian spy is real, stalks her and terrorizes her to reveal who told her about his secret identity. When she can’t reveal her source because there is none, he kills her for her trouble. I enjoyed how she created a fake man that resulted in her real death. Other patrons of The Drake have made deals with Gavin and all of them go sour. Most residents do not suspect Gavin is the Devil but the ones who do mysteriously die, disappear, or have to keep his secret under the pain of death.

666 Park Avenue is a good show and has enough to entertain week-to-week but we’ll never get a chance to see it develop more because it has been canceled by ABC. The cancellation announcement was paired with the cancellation announcement of Last Resort. The writers promised us closure and a real ending for the series but have pulled the remaining episodes from their regular time slot so when we will actually get to see said closure remains to be seen.

666 Park Avenue has been cancelled by ABC. The airing schedule of the remaining episodes is unknown.

Mockingbird Lane was a one-hour Halloween TV special created as a re-imagining of The Munsters. From the feel of the story and the origin story of the son, it felt like a pilot. Because the special cost $10 million to make, NBC ultimately decided against investing further in the show and decided to label it a special.

The first half of the special was a little scary and a bit charming. The second part fell flat and started to feel a little gimmicky. Even feeling that way about the special, if this was a pilot I’d watch more. It was well done and had potential. It would be nice to see a yearly special and have these characters return every year. All of the characters were similar to other incarnations of the Munster family but different enough to be fresh. The special effects were gorgeous; the sets were believable and looked expensive. Overall, the story was straightforward yet fun and a downright heart-warming.

What. A. Treat!

The advertising for Last Resort was unrelenting and intense so I gave it a shot. I fell in love with the show in the first episode so naturally it was canceled.

Before learning of the cancellation, I made sure to watch this show every week. Despite not having an alien or spaceship in sight this show felt like what I’d want a modern day Star Trek TV show to look like. Last Resort  started with 9 million viewers but started hemorrhaging viewers week by week. I suppose it was the controversial subject matter of a soldier taking matters into his own hand in some moral stance against the United States. In reality, I’d be angry with this guy because how dare he? The situation should have been handled differently at every turn. In fiction, it makes for great TV. Everyone on the show is compelling to watch but Andre Braugher as Captain Marcus Chaplin is like magic happen on the screen.

The show started out really strong but the newer episodes aren’t as tight and the situation seems as if is being unrealistically drawn out. The writers promised closure with the cancellation announcement. I am curious to see how it all turns out.

Last Resort airs Thursdays 8/7c on ABC. It streams for free on abc.go.com and Hulu.

Castle isn’t a science fiction show per se but there’s a lot of geekery that happens on that show. I must admit to having gaps in my viewership of the show. When sexual tension gets obnoxious and painful to watch I need a break. This season Beckett and Castle FINALLY get together and surprising it didn’t ruin the show. Let’s just hope they don’t introduce a pregnancy too soon. We wouldn’t want to go all 9th-season-of-X-Files just yet.

I started watching again just because and I’m glad I did. Last I watched, Esposito and Lanie were having a “thing”, Montgomery was still running the show, and Beckett and Castle were still seeing other people. Now we have a different captain, Lanie is giving Esposito the cold shoulder, Kate and Castle (Caskett) are sneaking around, and each episode is funnier than the next.

One of my favorite episodes is the one where they had to have a band’s documentary crew following Castle and the gang around with cameras. They hammed it up so much for the camera. My favorite was Esposito wearing tight shirts and making a muscle saying “Welcome to the gun show.” My next favorite episode starred none other than ED QUINN! This episode involved a murder at a convention and a fan experience for a science fiction TV show that lasted only 12 episodes called Nebula 9. Ed Quinn was the drunk, washed-up captain wearing a very tight space uniform. It was glorious.

I’m looking forward to next season. I think they may have found the guy that killed Kate’s mom but I’m not really sure. That isn’t the important part of the show to me; it’s the cast chemistry.

Castle airs Mondays 10/c on ABC. It is streaming for free on abc.go.com and Hulu.

My most happy, shiny, most favorite show has ended. The final season of Eureka began awesome enough. Part of the crew was going to space. It was an exciting set up that led to a disappointing thread for the whole season. Instead of being in space, part of the crew was in a simulation of Eureka while the other half of Eureka thought the crew was on a mission. In the simulation, something went wrong with the trip, they returned to Earth and 5 years had passed. Allison came back to learn that Jo was in a romantic relationship with Jack, Andy the Android deputy had turned dark and Eureka was under martial law. Grace, the wife that Henry never wanted in the first place, revealed that she was working with evil Beverly and took part in the simulation. Even worse, it was all Henry’s idea.

I was extremely disappointed Ed Quinn didn’t make a surprise return. I was never a fan of the Zane/ Jo Lupo relationship. I just never *got* Zane. I loved the Fargo/Holly relationship. I even loved it when her consciousness was put into an artificial body. Wil Wheaton was awesomely awful in the best way possible. I really hope he gets a permanent gig somewhere. What I did not love was the heartache involved with Allison and Jack. We’ve spent 3 years seeing her go through hell and back including losing Nathan Stark. I would have enjoyed seeing them wrap up the final season happy the whole time. Now I can’t look at Jo Lupo without feeling little sour grapes. She was my one of my favorite characters prior to this season. One of the best moments this season was Dr. Trevor Grant swooping in at the last minute and saving Global Dynamics from shutting down thus keeping Eureka from becoming a ghost town. The biggest payoff was Henry Deacon becoming the director of Global Dynamics.

No, the final season wasn’t my favorite but Eureka is one of my all-time favorite shows. Everyone did an excellent job on the show and they should be proud of the entire run. Thank you all for giving us a show that made me love, laugh, cry, and smile.

This is the underground sleeper hit TV show of the year. Booth at the End is literally about a guy sitting in a booth. The whole show takes place in a booth at a greasy diner. Different people come to visit the man in the booth because they have a problem and they heard through a friend or family member that he can make dreams come true. By doing the task set forth by “The Man” the “clients” would actually get what they wanted. The beauty of this series is that you can’t tell whether “The Man” is the devil, an alien, a sociopath or all three.

Booth at the End is extremely low budget but it is compelling because of the intricate storytelling. It is also a Hulu Exclusive Series show available for free now on its way to its third season. For those of you who are looking for something different and crave plot, this show is for you.

If you want to know what polishing a turd looks like, tune into Revolution each week. The premise is ridiculous and the delivery is… well… they try, bless their souls. I want to like Revolution. Sometimes, I’ve even taken on the role as a Revolution defender… or maybe a Revolution apologist because I like some of the actors.

As far as the premise, I still don’t understand how there can be a world where there is a persistent force that prevents electricity from happening. It makes NO sense. Even when explained to hell on the show, I just can’t activate the ability to suspend my disbelief. There are some extremely likable actors working on this project. In fact, I like everyone but there is something about how the show is pulled together that makes it seem like it needs to be on UPN circa 1996 in the 10 p.m. slot.

For whatever reason, I am still watching this show. It isn’t getting any more interesting and I have to force myself to watch it. I feel like I the cast and crew work so hard that I could at least watch their attempt at trying to entertain me. It has been announced that Revolution is going on an extended hiatus similar to what happen to V and I expect the same result- cancellation. NBC seems to think that Revolution is so compelling that the viewers will wait. A week later they admitted Revolution might lose some viewers. For the actors sake I hope they still have a job. For my sake, kill me now.

[Update] The meeting with Miles and Monroe was pretty good. They sure did make us wait for it.

Warehouse 13 seems to be successfully and quietly chugging along. Because of Syfy’s ridiculous streaming policies, I had to watch each episode one month after it aired. This prevented me from enjoying with other fans and prevented me from getting a true gauge of fellow fans interest.

Even with all that baggage, I managed to enjoy this season. We have 3 Star Trek actors as regular guests: Kate Mulgrew, René Auberjonois, Faran Tahir, Brent Spiner, and Jeri Ryan. Season 4 saw the introduction of the Brotherhood who guarded an artifact called the Astrolabe. Arty used it to turn back time and save the lives of Micha, Pete, Claudia, Mrs. Frederic, and H.G. Wells. Because of this he released an evil on the world. The evil initially seemed to be Brent Spiner as Brother Adrian but turned out to be Arty Nielsen as Tyler Durden. Arty was the evil the whole time and the team had to go to great lengths to neutralize Evil Arty without killing Arty Actual.

There was also the introduction of a new agent this season but after 2 episodes she disappeared. Leena died. Being as Leena didn’t do much except for catch a spidey sense here and there, I’m sorry to say it but her character isn’t much of a loss. Overall, it was a decent enough season. I enjoyed it and had no problem with it.

Warehouse 13 returns April 2013 on Syfy. It streams for free ONE MONTH after airing on syfy.com and Hulu.

So… some people were so turned off by Kristin Kruek in Smallville that they vowed not to watch her in anything else. While her character Lana annoyed me to no end on Smallville, I actually liked her in Earthsea and Chuck. Because I personally think the actress is awesome, I gave CW’s Beauty and the Beast a chance. I like it so far. It’s not my favorite show but I love the girl power, buddy cop feel of the relationship between Catherine Chandler and Tess Vargas. Catherine is a great lead but she does this thing with her voice after she asks a question that is so grating it could kill my desire to watch the show. I’d like for them to develop Tess’s character a bit more.

The lead man, Vincent Keller as The Beast, is sexy and handsome but not spectacularly so. Vincent is less a hero and more like a broody vampire. He became The Beast as a US soldier who was subjected to genetic alteration to enhance his performance in combat. Something went wrong with the process, the soldiers became too aggressive and all of them were exterminated but Vincent. He escaped and has been living in secret, on the run for years. Government agents or a shadow organization is hunting for him. While evading capture, he helps Catherine on her cases while nursing a budding romantic relationship with her.

The story is moving just a bit slow and is too heavy on the romantic sap. It needs to pump up the action and dig into the mythology/mystery more. I haven’t heard any cancellation rumors and tvbythenumbers.com says that the total viewership is up from week to week.

Beauty and the Beast airs Thursday 9/8c on CW. It also streams for free on cwtv.com and Hulu.

How do you become awesome with only 3 episodes per season? You toss Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman into a TV set and stir. The result is BBC’s hit Sherlock. If you have not had the pleasure of watching this version of Sherlock Holmes, stop what you are doing and seek it out now. The storytelling happens at such a breakneck pace that the rhythm of the show is intoxicating. Cumberbatch and Freeman have the perfect pH balance of character. One is just as important as the other. The banter and pranks are priceless. It has a buddy cop feel to it.

Sherlock manages to be horrifying, suspenseful, sexy, and funny; something sorely missed in Elementary. I’m still not overly fond of the casting of Moriarty and I don’t find him scary; the intimidating kind or the psychological thriller kind. I love Irene Adler. I hope they maneuver the story so that she makes a reappearance.

Season 3 of Sherlock will return in fall 2013. With the success of Freeman as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit and the upcoming success of Cumberbatch as a villain in Star Trek Into the Darkness, I hope we will continue to get episodes out of these guys. While I’m throwing out wishes, let’s have more than 3 episodes per season please!

Once you’ve seen Sherlock Holmes starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law and Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, Elementary just doesn’t cut it. I want to love it but what I really want is another episode of Cumberbatch as Sherlock. I like Elementary and highly enjoy Lucy Liu as Watson but I’m just not excited about Elementary. I want to be but I just can’t get there. Because I’ve killed too many brain cells watching Law & Order and CSI, Elementary doesn’t seem to do much more than those shows. Trust me, I know it’s a sad state of affairs when I admit to watching CSI and admitting that any show is better than it.

The Sherlock Holmes movies portray Sherlock Holmes as a rowdy but genius ass-kicking action hero. Sherlock portrays Sherlock Holmes as an OCD-ADHD-sociopath with a heart of gold. Elementary portrays Sherlock Holmes as a drug addict with a live-in, ex-doctor, anti-drug nanny?

I don’t know. I want more. The ratings are holding steady so this show satisfies a lot of people. To each his/her own. I’ll keep watching… I guess…

The Mercury Men was not released this year but I first experienced this year. I thought it was an excellent piece of work and deserves to be praised for creating a compelling adventure on a shoe-string budget that was dedicated to recreating a retro-styled science fiction experience. By now, you guys know how I feel about costumes. The costumes in this project were gorgeous. The entire piece was in black and white giving it a Twilight Zone/ retro-futuristic look. The shots and framing of scenes were so expertly done that I began to wonder why we don’t see more things this carefully and mindfully done.

I was especially fond of the fact that the aliens were from Mercury. We hear a lot of stories about the Moon and Mars but rarely is Mercury used. I loved how the aliens were made of lightning and they crackled every time they walked. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it and because of that I enjoyed its originality. The main character, Jack Yager is a lovable Han Solo/ John Crichton type. Edward Borman was responsible for making the entire project FEEL retro. He had the classic Twilight Zone look to him and absolutely convinced me he belonged in the era. There was a noticeable absence of a female lead but it didn’t take away from the overall enjoyment of the show.

The Mercury Men was produced for Syfy and shown in several series of shorts. It is now available in a 42 minute chunk on Amazon for $1.99 and it worth it.

Each season the story with the Abnormals continued to evolve and gave a great sense of mystery and action. The mythology of the series was rich and had so many creatures and included so many great characters like Nikola Tesla and Jack the Ripper. Tapping as Helen Magnus was a great female role model. She took control and kicked a lot of ass each week without making her male counterparts seem emasculated. Seeing the guest cast of actors that do the Vancouver sci-fi circuit was always a treat.

This show wasn’t for everyone but the fans who liked it, LOVED it. Sanctuary was rumored to be one of the least expensive shows to create so it is truly a shame that it had to be canceled. For now, you can see Amanda Tapping guest starring on Supernatural.

I had NO interest in watching Alcatraz but did so because others were enjoying it. I thought it was a weak premise at best and the slow start didn’t help. I was bored for most of the season. Five episodes in I started to warm up to the characters and the mythology. Just when I thought the show was gaining traction and could have been a great Fringe replacement, Fox announced that it was canceling the show (Typical Fox right?!).

The only think I can say positive about the show is that it looked great.

Sorry folks. I just didn’t get this one. I gave The Misfits the good old 3 episode try but I just didn’t dig it. It reminded me too much of Heroes and there wasn’t enough of a mystery for me to care.

Person of Interest is another show I had to stop watching because CBS doesn’t stream it online. I think it is a really good show and I’m not sure why it isn’t available online. I’ve been thinking about re-opening a Netflix account. If it’s there, I’ll catch up.

Honestly, I stopped watching Big Bang Theory. Earlier this year when I moved to Ithaca, NY, I didn’t have a TV and CBS wasn’t streaming Big Bang Theory online. I stopped watching and even when CBS started streaming the show, I tried it for a few episodes and it seemed like the characters hadn’t evolved any and the same jokes were being used over and over. I do like the mainstream success that the show is having; even my Mom watches it now! I was excited because I thought maybe America was trying to get inside the heads of “geeks” and “nerds”. It could be that America is laughing AT them (us?) and not WITH them. The show seems to have fallen out of favor with self-proclaimed geeks and nerds because they claim it’s geeksploitation. An Unearthly Child is the first episode of Doctor Who but not the pilot. It is a 4-part episode which first aired 11/23/1963.

An Unearthly Child

First thought: Wow… The Doctor is a racist.

Second thought: Maybe his talking about a different planet.

If I hadn’t already been a fan of the Doctor Who series, this episode would have turned me off. Instead of being a carefree, humorous, lovable character, The Doctor was mean, arrogant, and creepy. He kidnapped two teachers who had the best interest of his granddaughter at heart. He taunted the two teachers, kidnapped them, and took them back in time against their will. It would be different if he were kidnapping physicists and scientists who were convinced that the world is still flat but instead he taunted two school teachers. I know The Doctor is clever and I rather enjoy when he puts some narrow-minded noob in his or her place but to do it out of the gate with strangers is off putting. We are seeing The Doctor through the eyes of the two teachers and all things considered, they are taking it rather well.

The most curious of all is Susan Foreman. She is The Doctor’s granddaughter. This means that The Doctor has at done the deed at least once, produced an offspring and his offspring produced an offspring. It also means that for some reason he decided to take her on his travels and became responsible for her. Where are her parents? Is she adopted? Is grandfather just a loving nickname Susan uses for The Doctor? If he isn’t Dr. Foreman, then why does Susan have a first and last name? Is it just an Earth name? I’m interested in learning more about this relationship because it has never been mentioned or revisited in the new series… or has it and I’ve just not gotten to that part yet? Don’t answer that.

The Cave of Skulls
The beginning of this episode treats us to a man stroking his bone while people huddle around and watch him. We’ve traveled back to caveman times and are watching while some tribesman tries to make a fire. Instead of using the bone in his hand to create friction with the kindling in front of him, he’s rubbing in his hands too far above the kindling for anything to catch. There is some tribal in-fighting about if he doesn’t start a fire then some other guy will take his position and his girl. For some reason this reminds me of  ’Carnival of Monsters’ and ‘The Pirate Planet’ because we are presented with a local political problem that feels insignificant but if The Doctor doesn’t interfere, it could have lasting negative effects.

The two teachers, Barbara and Ian, are still in disbelief that they’ve traveled back in time. It’s bigger on the inside, the landscape outside is different, I’m stressed out and in disbelief… yadda, yadda. The Doctor is puzzled that the TARDIS is still stuck in Police Box form. I’ve always known there was a story to why the TARDIS is a Police Box but to see it dealt with this early in the show is intriguing.

As they explore outside, we see sketchy cave people. When a man disappears right in front of your eyes Ian, how do you calmly suggest he could have gone off investigating. Susan’s overly emotional overreaction makes me wonder if she is a Time Lord/Human hybrid.

Za and Kal are the two warring cavemen who are fighting to become leader of the tribe. Kal sees The Doctor use a lighter, kidnaps him and brings him back to the tribe. When The Doctor wakes and tells them that he will make as much fire as they want, it is as this point that I realize that The Doctor has an amazing head of hair on his head. It’s all one color, it wisps away gently whenever he moves, it has a gentle bump of a curl; I can’t take my eyes off of it. Then enter Susan, Ian, and Barbara. They ruin the magical hair moment while also getting the cavemen all riled up. The team is thrown in a place where there are tons of skulls on the ground with their heads split open.

The Forest of Fear
Ian starts off by chastising The Doctor. To be fair, The Doctor was bitching and moaning and the chastisement by Ian got him to button his lips. As the crew try to free themselves from an actual cave of bashed in skulls, it is obvious that none of them carry knives. An old lady caveman frees The Doctor, Susan, Ian, and Barbara but they whine so much that they don’t get very far. Lady Caveman Macbeth keeps urging Za to strive for power and urges him to follow The Doctor to get the secret to fire. It seems that the women of the tribe actually have more power than they let on. They run into a dead animal with a huge head and tusks and Barbara loses her mind, yells, and gives away their position to Za. Za finds the crew but is attacked by an quickly seen if not totally unseen wild beast. When Za is hurt, Barbara and Ian go to his aid. The Doctor does not understand why they would help the savages. In fact, he refuses to help. In helping Za, Ian seems more like The Doctor I know than The Doctor himself. The Doctor seems like a sniveling coward. I even think The Doctor was going to stab Za with a tree branch! This is actually a bit exciting. Who *is* this Doctor?!

The Firemaker
We begin like an episode of CSI: Prehistoric Earth. Kal still can’t tell the difference between a rock and a knife. The Doctor notes there is no blood on the “knife” and this somehow means that Kal killed the old cave woman. Kal is driven out to the forest while we watch two cave people discuss making fire. All I could think is ‘these people are incredibly stupid, they should starve to death’. Za and Kal have a caveman showdown that was ridiculously long and painful to watch. Where is Indiana Jones with a pistol when you need him? I guess I’m incredibly jaded because I have matches, a lighter, and I watch Survivor Man. I know how to make fire. It’s truly difficult to relate to the cave people and the upheaval in their tribe. I can’t even fake any anthropological analysis.

So why were the cavemen afraid of fire in skulls on a stick? Why didn’t they want to let The Doctor and crew go? Why were The Doctor and crew running in place why people off camera smacked them in the face with leaves and bushes? We will never know because the gang made it to the TARDIS just in time to escape the psychotic cave people.

The Doctor tells Ian he isn’t in control of the TARDIS and can’t take him back to his own time. They instead land on a planet of white trees and dangerous levels of radiation. Dramatic prairie dog.

I read the first Hunger Games book in two nights on my iPhone. I could not put it down. It wasn’t my favorite book but it was compelling. I loved the way the world was described. I liked the way The Capitol and its citizens looked. I appreciated the Districts and their distinct industries. Reading about the games themselves was a page-turner.

Enter the movie. It wasn’t a terrible movie, just a letdown. It looked gorgeous, the sets were awesome, and most of the costumes were AMAZING. However, the direction glossed over many things so quickly that the move felt like a SparkNotes version of the book. My biggest beef is that Katniss bought her mocking jay pin from some random lady in a flea market. Another misstep was the “Girl on Fire” dress that Katniss wore as she rode through the area. The book described it so magnificently that I just knew they would blow the whole FX budget on the dress. Sadly they didn’t. It ended up looking like she got a Project Runway dress with some partially lit Sterno slapped on the back of it. Her red interview dress did not disappoint and was on par with how I imagined it.

I’m on the fence about saying this was a terrible movie. I can’t, in good conscious, say that it was. I could see all the work on the screen but something missed the mark for me and left me with an absolutely bland experience. I just didn’t buy Katniss and her motives on screen. I didn’t really feel the fear in the actual games. The cornucopia was way smaller on screen than in my imagination. Where were the mutts? Why did they not have the faces of the dead? Haymitch didn’t just seem like a raging alcoholic as presented in the book. He just seemed like a guy who drank every once and awhile and pretty much had his act together. I could go on but I’ll admit that there was an overwhelming amount of information to cram in a 2:22 minute movie. My hope is that the next two movies are broken up into two parts so there won’t be pressure on the crew to cram it all in and give us something absolutely meh. I can complain all I want but I was right there at the midnight showing and I will be there again at the next release.

According to IMDB, The Hunger Games had an estimated budget of $78,000,000 and as of June 24, 2012, the total domestic gross is $402,964,540.

The Hunger Games was released theatrically on March 23, 2012 by Lionsgate. The DVD, Blu-Ray, and other digital formats will be released on August 18, 2012.

Note: I finished The Hunger Games trilogy. The second book was really good. I went through it just as fast as I went through the first one. The third book felt long and excruciating. It was extremely depressing and I wanted to quit reading it several times.

John Carter will go down in history as a flop all because the marketing was terrible. Whoever decided not to put “of Mars” in the title, decided not to feature the spaceships, the princess in skimpy outfits but instead to make it look like a Prince of Persia rip-off should look for other work. I only went to see this movie because I knew it had something to do with Mars. I wasn’t excited about and I saw a week after it opened. I went in expecting the worst but was treated to a really amazing film. It is a shame that more people didn’t experience this film because it had a very epic look and feel to it. It was on par with Star Wars. Yeah, I said it.

Not only was this film good, it was good in 3D. The glass ships were phenomenal to watch and if you didn’t see them in 3D you definitely missed out. The story felt like a typical sci-fi story but it was written decades before most of the stories that know and love today. Additionally, for a story written in 1912 by Edgar Rice Burroughs, it was compelling and you guessed it, ahead of its time. Taylor Kitsch as John Carter was tragic, funny, sexy, heroic, and a joy to watch. Lynn Collins is a welcomed addition to the Disney princess collection and if not the best dressed then the most interesting. Everything about this film was set up to make you love it. There was even an adorable Martian dog thing. There were many well-known actors in this film and they were all equally amazing.

With Andrew Stanton at the helm, Disney footing the bill of $250 million dollars, and Michael Giacchino on the wheels of steel, John Carter should have been a hit. While it was a hit worldwide raking in $209 million, domestically John Carter only made $73 million dollars (as of June 21, 2012 via Box Office Mojo).

Initially I was skeptical that The Avengers could be awesome. I saw Iron Man 2 as being decent, the Captain America film didn’t really wow me as much as I wanted, and The Hulk movies had received so many bad reviews that I never bothered seeing them. Loki seemed too wiry and mustache-twirly to be an interesting threat for an entire movie. And to top it off, a handful of man-divas all in one movie felt like a disaster of epic proportions waiting to happen… then entered Joss Whedon (Buffy, Firefly, Cabin in the Woods)… then came the first trailer. It was nothing but a love fest after that.

There are spoilers here so if you haven’t seen the movie, bugger off.

The movie was a thrill ride from the beginning to end. The heroes were believable. I was extremely on the fence about some characters like Captain America, The Hulk, & Hawkeye but by the end I was a giddy as Agent Coulson meeting Captain America for the first time. Since then, I have seen the movie twice, reviewed it twice on the Sci-Fi Party Line Podcast, put Avengers wallpapers on everything from my computer, to my Facebook cover photo and all my iDevices. I’m in full Avengers fever mode! I’m so pumped up that I want to take this character by character! I’ll try to go in the order in which the characters appear in the movie as per my memory (which can be sketchy so I may get a few wrong).

Nick Fury

Prior to the movie I didn’t realize that he was supposed to be a leader but a leader known for not telling his crew the whole truth. I just pegged him for the guy that is always doing the right thing. I still feel that way because his subterfuge doesn’t seem to be for the harm for the team but to motivate them. Did he make an arrangement with Agent Coulson to boost the team’s morale? Did he stage the whole fight just to show the world that Earth has some bad muthaf____s? Does he even need the friggin’ eye patch? I don’t know but Samuel L. Jackson did a great job. I believed him, his fight scenes look real, and any one that can jump out of a flaming helicopter, land with a tuck and roll and can pull himself together enough to start shooting gets my respect.

Hawkeye (Clint Barton)

So Katniss and the Hunger Games have worn out my childlike fascination with archery. Yes, it’s still cool but now there are 3 movies and a TV show with heroes who are badass archers; Hunger Games, The Avengers, Brave, and Arrow. Not only that, it sucks because Hawkeye doesn’t really get to shine until later in the movie because he was possessed by Loki’s “tip” early on. I will admit that I love seeing how he tracks a target with his eyes. He looks without looking which is pretty awesome. He’s good, he can hold his own in a fight, he’s arguable better than Katniss but who is he really? I’m not really sure if I care enough about his character to see a movie based on him. I am however ready to see Jeremy Renner as the new Bourne!

Maria Hill

Meh. She feels drowned out by all of the other awesome that is surrounding her. She’s a good soldier. She looks good in her uniform. I do like how she isn’t afraid to question Nick Fury. She backs down but he knows that she knows he has his secrets.

Agent Phil Coulson

I love this guy! I am a fan of dry humor and even-tempered people. I love how he’s at the heart of all of the previous films with Avengers in them. I love how dedicated he is and how persistent he is. I’ve moaned on Twitter on several occasions that I wanted a movie focused on just him. I know it won’t happen but a girl can wish. In this recent film, I love his interaction with Tony Starks and Pepper Potts. It’s ridiculous for Stark to be jealous of this guy but when he says “Phil? I thought his first name was Agent” it gives Coulson some humanity and really takes him from being the faceless suit to one of the team. Agent Coulson’s man-crush on Steve Rogers is also a great scene. Coulson isn’t much too look at. He has no bulging muscles, he’s not jumping out of helicopters, and his suit doesn’t do anything special. He is armed with loyalty, a gun with an unknown function, and a heart of vibranium. And what does Joss Whedon do? He treats him like Wash and KILLS HIM! Prior to the movie I knew nothing about Life Model Decoys so I was extremely pissed about his death. The only reason I stayed after the credits is because I’d hoped we’d see Agent Coulson on an operating table in some secret lab being fitted with bionic parts or something. I really hope this isn’t the end for Agent Coulson.

Loki

I have to give it to Tom Hiddleson. He really knows how to play an irritating jerk with delusions of grandeur. I had problems with him being the main baddie of The Avengers movie because he didn’t seem like a strong or interesting enough character in Thor. He seemed like an evil Pee-Wee Herman with soccer mom flip curls and an ego as big and ridiculous as his helmet. I didn’t think he could be scary enough. In all fairness, he wasn’t scary but he did release the crazy. Opening a portal for super soldiers on hover crafts and as Carl called them, floating hell whales is pretty intense. I will admit that Loki’s entrance was pretty rock star. I don’t think the film was on for five minutes before he started shooting and exploding things that resulted in leveling military facility. It is impressive but why must he go through all of this just to outdo Thor? I guess Loki can’t help but feel inadequate to the shining ray of handsomeness that is Thor. Thor’s massive pythons should piss off any man. It is still no excuse for killing Agent Coulson. I do wonder how he could completely turn his back on the people who raised him. Sure Loki doesn’t have the best origin story but having some family should be worth something to him. Finally, I couldn’t figure out why he had the muzzle on at the end of the movie. I guess no one wanted to hear another one his diatribes.

Captain America (Steve Rogers)

So… I wasn’t the biggest fan of Captain America: The First Avenger. I thought it was a solid film. It was entertaining. I was gorgeous to look at but it wasn’t as cool as Iron Man’s first movie. To make matters worse, we are introduced to him punching a punching bag which was a glorious sight to behold let me tell ya BUT instead of seeing some of the badass things that he’s done, we get a sob story and flashbacks to the movie that I thought was just ok. It was a boring start for him but Steve slowly built his momentum. By the end of the film he was a tough leader not afraid to challenge people, kicking ass, cracking jokes, honorable, a true team player, and an all-around great character. Sure it took a second viewing of the film for me to see all of this but it’s there and worth it to see his character growth. I think a second Captain America film might be better than the first if the stick with him as he is now. The Captain was in some of my favorite scenes. Who knew a vibranium shield mixed with the slam of Thor’s hammer could level a forest? When he tried to order the NYPD around, they was not receptive to a man in tights but they saw him slam around some aliens like rag dolls and they had no problem listening to him. He was willing to sacrifice himself for those people in the bank. I didn’t notice it the first time I saw it but it looks like Steve wasn’t sure he was going to make it out of that alive. He looked visibly shaken yet heroic in the scene afterwards. I think that was when I understood his character more. Yes, he built like Hercules but his wholesome spirit and good heart is really his super power. That was the point of his first movie but it was done better in The Avengers.

Black Widow (Natasha Romanoff)

GIRL CRUSH! I love her! All she has is a leather cat suit, two guns, and a whole lot of viciousness! I love her reverse interrogation technique. Villains are such idiots. They see a pretty girl and think they have things under control; think again! I think Johansson’s escape-from-the-chair scene may be better than Statham’s escape-from-the-chair scene and that’s saying a lot. I love the way she uses her whole body as a weapon and literally throws her weight around to her advantage. She’s not a weepy character but she isn’t an ice queen either. She gets scared, she feels, she gets shit done, and I like that. Something else I like about Black Widow is something that was pointed out by Hawkeye. She’s only a spy, not a soldier. To see her matching blow for blow with a guy with enhanced muscles, a green beast, a man in a metal suit, AND a GOD is beyond impressive. To be fair to the guys, she is Russian so that gives her an unfair advantage.

Iron Man (Tony Stark)

This is my first Avengers love. I love a snarky smart ass. I love a man who loves gadgets. I love a man that can put his hands on something and create something out of nothing. Going in to the Avengers, I was a little afraid that because of the success of the Iron Man movies that Tony Stark would overshadow all of the other characters. Not so. He was tempered by Captain America and even humbled a bit. His new fly-in walkway that removes his suit as he is walking into his building is amazing. The bracelets that automatically suits him up, even in mid-air, is beyond awesome. I love how Tony’s mention of shawarma is boosting shawarma sales.

The Hulk (Bruce Banner)

I think Hulk had the best showing of all. After two mediocre Hulk movies, I did not want to see the Hulk. I thought the Hulk would be the weakest, most annoying character of all. Boy was I wrong. I was concerned about Mark Ruffalo being the Hulk. I didn’t see it at first but he took the character and made him vulnerable and easy to relate to; heck, he was even lovable. I would love to see a feature Hulk film now with Mark Ruffalo as the big guy. The audience loved all of his best scenes. Him punching Thor, him knocking Loki around, and his grin at the command to SMASH.

The Mighty Thor

I love this god! If Iron Man is my first love, Thor is my true love. I really miss the big, huge blonde beef cake action hero. I love his face. I love his voice. I love his shirtless, glistening chest and those extra-large “guns”. His entrance was as action packed as Loki. He rode in on lightning, entered a flying helicopter, smacked Iron Man, and took off with Loki. His fight with Iron Man and Captain America was epic. I never thought about putting him up against the Hulk but it worked because, next to Iron Man, I think Thor is the only other person that can go round for round with Hulk. I hope there is another Thor movie.

This movie was an excellent thrill ride from beginning to end. I’m finding it hard to find fault or nitpicks other than Agent Coulson dying. I hope there is another film. Until then, I’m considering buying my third ticket.

We saw some heartbreaking things this year. Bobby’s death has to be the most traumatic. Sure we got to have him in ghost form but it wasn’t the same. I’m a peeved that the writers saw fit to kill Bobby and his seemingly replacement Frank. I didn’t really dig that at least one of the brothers wasn’t excited to have Bobby back in some form or another. It would have been interesting to see them at odds with one another over the ethics of letting Bobby help them as a ghost. I wouldn’t have minded seeing Bobby the Grumpy Ghost for another season. Let’s go back a bit further and look at WHY Bobby died. Dick Roman. If we look at Dick we do have to look to Castiel who was responsible for letting the Leviathans loose in the first place. Castiel’s transformation from reliable, dedicated, and obedient angel was turned on his head this season. I love when Castiel declared himself God and went around smiting charlatans and religious frauds. My favorite is when he changed a stained glass window from a depiction of himself complete with khaki trench coat. Then after all of that, he died… or so we thought. We find him again, with amnesia and healing people. He got his memories back, kicked some ass, and took Lucifer out of Sam’s head but now he is forever changed to a childlike state. I’m glad Castiel didn’t die but this Rain Man act isn’t fun and I’d like the old Castiel back. I am, however, that we don’t have to see the Sam with Lucifer in his head struggle anymore. It was tiresome and I wanted to be done with that thread last season.

The threat this year felt a little contrived but was an awesome ride anyway. I mean… how many apocalypses (apocalypsi?) can you have in the span of seven years and it not get a little old? After seven years each world ending event is a little different and the baddie just a little more impossible to kill. Meanwhile, the only people from first season are Sam and Dean. Everyone is GONE! I’m not sure where the boys will go from here and who they will have to tether them to the world but it will be interesting to see.

We also usually get one really epically hilarious episode person season. This season, the humor was a bit more evenly spread out with something really funny in each episode. The funniest episode this season had to be “Plucky Pennywhistle’s Magical Menagerie”. Creepy clowns win for the most disturbing baddie of the season. I enjoyed Felicia Day’s episode. She is always a good, geeky treat. The time travel episode “Time After Time” with Nicholas Lea was my next favorite. Krycek as Elliot Ness? Hell yes please! “Out With the Old” was funny because we get to see dean craving to put on Ballerina shoes and dance. I would give anything to see an outtake of him doing Black Swan. “Party On, Garth” was really good. Hearing him rock out to the Bell Biv DeVoe song “Poison” was surreal and kinda epic for Garth.

All in all, this was a solid season of Supernatural. Kudos for playing “Carry On My Wayward Son” for the finale. It feels like we haven’t heard that in years! My only concern is the events in the finale. Why is Dean in hell again? We’ve done this already. I don’t want to spend another season with one of the brothers having to overcome a ridiculous stint in hell. There has to be another angle we can take. Let’s bring back the old gods… maybe even Thor. That would be amazing to see Dean wisecracking on the God of Thunder. Great job guys; another awesome season!

So let me see if I understand what exactly happened this season. You know how Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer had an evil past under the name Angelus? Stephan had the same thing but he was called The Ripper had he was compelled to reactivate his old evil self by his supposedly BFF Klaus. Klaus wants Elena’s blood because she is the doppelgänger of Catherine, a sociopathic vampire chick from Stephan and Damon’s past. With Elena’s blood, Klaus wants to make vampire-werewolf hybrids. Since Stephan is all Ripper, Elena is spending time & falling in love with Damon. It only becomes a problem when Stephan is freed from Klaus’ compulsion. It’s too late, Stephan is pissed. Stephan steals the coffins Kreepy Klaus has been carrying around with him. The coffins hold his siblings but there is one mysterious coffin that needs Bonnie’s magic to be opened. That coffin holds his mother. The mother feels guilty for unleashing vampires on the planet and seeks to kill all of her children. She doesn’t succeed and is killed… or is she? Alaric begins to suffer the consequences of using his reanimation ring. It makes him crazy. Klaus’s mother’s one last give to her children was to make crazy Alaric an ultimate vampire so that he will have the power to kill her children. The catch is that his life is tied to Elena’s life. If she dies, he dies. Of course a convoluted set up like that doesn’t get mentioned without a payoff. Elena is killed and Alaric dies because of but Elena died with vampire blood in her system and rose from the dead as VAMPYR! I can’t wait to see how this turns out!

This has to be my favorite season of The Vampire Diaries. It dispensed with the sappy diaries and Twilight baggage to become a fun, action-packed television show. I can’t wait until next season!

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursday’s 9/8c on CW and will return October 2012.

It’s that time of year where I tell you which science fiction, fantasy, and horror movies were at the top of my favorites list and which movies were turds. This list includes only the movies that I’ve seen.

Tops of 2011

18. Battle: Los Angeles – Very predictable but not bad. Really liked the characters. Wished there was more alien appearances.
17. Source Code - Seems like Jake Gyllenhaal demanded to be in a movie like Avatar sans the blue people. I liked the “timey-whimey’ aspect.
16. The Losers – Great action movie. On par with The Expendables.
15. The Thing – Fun. Horrifying. Not as good as the 80′s version but much more disgusting. I jumped in my seat a couple of times.
14. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides – Not bad. I liked it more than the last two movies. I have pirate fatigue though.
13. Another Earth – This movie isn’t for everyone but I enjoyed it. It reminds me of Contact in a way. It was less about the sci-fi and more about the story which really pulls you in.
12. Green Hornet – Way better than I thought it would be. Funny and fun.
11. Captain America – A solid movie. It looked good. I didn’t like it as much as as Iron Man or Thor but it’s still a good film.
10. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 – An action-packed and fitting ending to a beloved story.
9. Super 8 – Great period piece. Phenomenal acting. Someone described it as Stand By Me meets a very angry E.T..
8. In Time – Outstanding world-building. Great props and set. Interesting social commentary.
7. Adjustment Bureau – Great sci-fi. Amazing storytelling.
6. Paul – The trailers were a turn off but the movie was awesome. It wasn’t the typical movie poking fun at geek fandom. It was fun like Galaxy Quest.
5. X-Men: First Class – Way better than I thought it would be. Classy for a superhero flick.
4. Fright Night - Two words: Colin Farrell. He was a modern yet classic vampire who wasn’t emo and didn’t sparkle.
3. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows - I think the second movie one-upped the first movie! RDJ as Sherlock is genius!
2. Thor - This movie entertained me the most. It was funny and unexpected. Like Iron Man, I never imagined that I would actually like a Thor movie.
1. Rise of the Planet of the Apes - I’m surprised too! This movie hit every note for me. Not only is a good stand alone movie with acting, effects, and plot, it is a re-make worthy of the original.

Turds of 2011

7. Transformers: Dark of the Moon – My favorite turd of the year! I hated this movie in 3D. I saw it a second time with kids without 3D and enjoyed it a bit more. The effects, as usual, were top notch.
6. Sucker Punch – I didn’t hate it. I accepted the artist vision. I enjoyed it more for the effects and the costuming.
5. Conan the Barbarian – Decent enough. It would have been more appropriate to make this a TV movie. I could imagine it being a decent TV show like Hercules: The Legendary Journeys.
4. Green Lantern – Or as people think I’ve dubbed it: Green LanTURD. I was so excited about this movie and all I got was this lousy “meh”.
3. Priest – After Legion, I was skeptical to see another winter sci-fi movie with Paul Bettany. Priest was great as an effects reel but sucked as a movie. Am I the only person who wonders why people keep hiring Karl Urban?
2. Cowboys & Aliens – Sounds like you can’t go wrong with a title like that. Sounds like easy camp and fun action right? This movie managed to be boring and lame. The actors were totally squandered.
1. Apollo 18 – TOP TURD OF 2011! I’m not sure which movie I hate more: Skyline or Apollo 18? Not only had it felt like I’d seen the movie before it was annoyingly low budget. It felt like Paranormal Activity IN SPACE!

It’s that time of year where I tell you which television shows were my favs and which were flops. A lot of the shows aren’t science fiction but they are close enough to be on this list. Genres you may see are science fiction, fantasy, horror, sitcoms, action and drama.

Favs of 2011

18. Chuck -  I agree that it should be the last season. It was great while it lasted.
17. Grimm - It’s growing on me…
16. Big Bang Theory – Still funny but I wish they’d shake up the show a bit. It’s becoming predictable.
15. Sanctuary – The little show that could. I love this show because it’s a little gritty and definitely underground. Amanda Tapping as Helen Magnus is a great heroine.
14. Person of Interest - Great new show. Amazing action and mystery.
13. Falling Skies – Two words: Noah Wyle. Sometimes that’s all it takes.
12. Terra Nova – A lot of folks dislike this show. I think it’s fine. Getting to see Stephen Lang and Jason O’Mara “running around doing stuff” every week is a treat.
11. Warehouse 13 – We lost CCH Pounder but gained Kate Mulgrew. There was even a Jeri Ryan appearance. Sasha Roiz and Anthony Michael Hall were great additions as well.
10. Merlin – A solid hour of fantasy and it’s still funny and magical. I seriously want Arthur to understand that Gwen was enchanted!
9. Vampire Diaries – This season has been non-stop development. I love the pacing. It’s less Twilight-sappy and more like Buffy.
8. Once Upon a Time – Fairy tales told in a modern setting. I love the story, the characters, and most of all the costumes!
7. Supernatural – Did they just kill Bobby and Castiel in the same season? I’m still in denial.
6. Community – Geeky, funny, unpredictable and not stereotypical. I love how odd this show is. The characters are amazing.
5. True Blood – I am Team Alcide all the way!
4. Game of Thrones – Beautiful, intriguing, skanky, and disturbing all at once.
3. Eureka - Wacky scientists and exploding gadgets never get old to me. The holiday special was epic.
2. Doctor Who - The first half of the season was flawless. I fell in love with Matt Smith this year!
1. American Horror Story - I enjoyed the uniqueness of this show and the story made me anticipate watching every week.

Honorable mentions of 2011

We have to say goodbye to the shows that were great and were canceled before their time.

3. No Ordinary Family – The show that was awesome but no one watched. This one was worthy of your attention folks.
2. The Sarah Jane Adventures – This is the saddest of all cancellations because we lost Elisabeth Sladen. This was a no doubt a kids show but I’ve been watching it since Tennant’s appearance and loved watching it.
1. Smallville – The past few seasons have been outstanding. I was sad to see the show go but 10 years is a respectable run.

Flops of 2011

These are the shows that were just plain bad.

10. V – V is my favorite of the flops because it tried really hard. The marketing was excellent. While most of the story was uneven, when it was good, it was really good. The actors did a respectable job but the story should have stuck closer to the original V.
9. Bar Karma – I liked the idea of crowd sourced television but Bar Karma started off with a really thrilling mystery then slipped into one-off self contained shows that never really pulled the audience in.
8. Camelot – What was that? I watched it to the end but everyone hated this show.
7. Stargate: Universe – I don’t know what the hell was going on with this how. I tried REALLY hard to like this show. The effort was a strain. The effects were nice and there were some nice individual episodes but as a whole piece, let’s just say the cancellation was a relief.
6. Alphas – I just couldn’t care about this show.
5. Haven – The blandest show on television. I’d rather eat unsalted, cold instant mash potatoes than to watch this show.
4. Outcasts – It drew me in with Jamie Bamber, then they killed him. After that, I never understood what was going on.
3. Torchwood: Miracle Day – The “T” in Torchwood stands for train wreck, torture, terrible, tacky, tasteless, and take this somewhere else please!
2. The Event – They tried too hard to be a Lost replacement. It failed miserably. All it took was one episode for me to quit.
1. The Cape – I literally got sick to my stomach watching this. I bemoaned the carnival in the last season of Heroes. Why The Cape lead with a carnival setting is beyond me. I made it through the pilot and that was it. Worst. Show. Ever.
